Domenica 21 aprile 2002 si č svolto puntualmente dalle 07:30 alle 19:30 il convegno IORT Ieri Oggi e Domani di Chirurgia Oncologia e Radioterapia. Larga partecipazione di pubblico e medici. Ha aperto la giornata congressuale il Presidente di Med e Med onlus Ammiraglio Luciano Zappata, sono seguiti i saluti del Presidente dell'Associazione lotta ai Tumori, Dante Manfredi e del Presidente dei Giovani Chirurghi Antonio Crucitti. Il Cardinale Lazzaro Barragan responsabile della pastorale della salute della Santa Sede ha augurato ai presenti buon lavoro e ha trasmesso la benedizione del Santo Padre. Luigi Gentilini Direttore Scientifico di Med e Med onlus ha introdotto e coordinato i lavori scientifici, sono seguite le sedici relazione ed ampio dibattito. Sono stati presenti tutti i relatori. Sono in corso di valutazione le schede di partecipazione all'E.C.M. e prossimi appuntamenti. In corso definizione assegnazione congress card.

Intra Operative Radiation Therapy Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow
RESEARCH CONTINUES
Until the research of genetic engineering on DNA, staminal and clone cells or on specific antibodies associated with chemical substances used as bullets against cancer shall not justify, with some concrete results, the economic public support and the extraordinary money collection, the cancer therapy will still be based on preventive care, surgical excision, combined with hyperthermia and neo or adjuvant therapies and with a radiotherapy sandwich plan or intraoperative theraphy (IORT). This last technical solution, although accepted at an international level, is rarely practiced at the moment. The principal difficulties are based on: organization problems, the cost-benefit relation and some prejudices, deriving from taboo more than scientific deduction. MED e MED Onlus organizes a “one day meeting” dedicated to surgeons and medical specialists using IORT technique and those specialists that appreciate it but that aren’t able to perform it owing to organizing reasons or to bureaucratic limitations. The therapeutic results of IORT technique with accelerated particles emitted by a system located in an operating room are an evidence of the effectiveness of the modality that will be widely spread out with the support of Telemedicine. The deep investigation of this practice, the blending co-operation between surgery, radiotherapy and other specializations and the daily application of a valid therapy against cancer disease one of most killing, expensive in terms of life and money, has been the realisation of one of the constitutive commitments of MED e MED Onlus - Medicine and Mediterranean.
